Saint Peter's Opportunities and Involvement

Adult Choir

St. Peter's Adult Choir rehearses on Wednesdays from 7:30-9:00pm and sings weekly at the 11:00 Sunday service from September through early June

Membership is open to everyone - no audition required! We embrace all who love music, and our ranks include both experienced singers and enthusiastic beginners.

The choir is about 30 voices strong and averages 15-20 voices on any given Sunday. We sing a wide range of music from composers like Mendelssohn, Handel, Vaughan Williams, Mathias, Brahms, Willan, Howells, Rutter and Tallis. We have a talented composer in our midst, and we have the privilege of offering anthems that he has written for us. We've even been known to forget we're Anglicans and hurl ourselves at a great spiritual or two.

If you have questions about the choir, call or write choir director Don Witman. 703-698-0577 or stpetersmusic@verizon.net. The company is good, the music is even better, and the chance to raise your voice in praise is unparalleled!

"Let every instrument be tuned for praise!
Let all rejoice who have a voice to raise!
And may God give us faith to sing always - Alleluia!"

Children & Youth Choir

Youth Choir Practice will start on Wednesday, September 7. The first practice will be an exception, in that the choirs (mid-elementary and up) will be reviewing “Beautiful City” by Schwartz from Godspell to sing during the 9:00 service on Sept. 11th. (Kim Whitman will play for the groups that day.) To see the regular schedule and to find a registration form, go here.

Emily could use some parental volunteers to help with the younger children. You can leave a message for her in the office or use her temporary email emilykoons@cox.net.

There will be a sign-up sheet for anyone interested in eating dinner together in the conference room from 5:30-6:00. Dinner is optional and you can bring your own or a pizza could be delivered

ADULT FORUMS - SUNDAYS AT 10:00

Is there a book of the Bible, a figure in Christain history, an ethical dilemma, or contemporary issue that interests you? The adult forums are open to anyone that would like to share a book, an experience, or insight into the Christain faith that might be of interest to our community at St. Peter's. If you would like to organize and lead a discussion, or feel that a certain topic should be addressed in a future forum, please contact Craig Phillips, Laura Doud, or Doug Marshall.

Learn to Knit! - Emily Koons will be offering a beginner's knitting class after the 11:00 a.m. service and coffee. Meet by the organ after the service. The class will offer how to do basic stitches and making simple projects.

Learn to Read Biblical Greek

Join us this fall as we learn to read New Testament Greek together. We hope to adopt a one-room school house approach in which people at different levels in their study of Greek, from the beginner to those with a basic reading ability; all will be able to learn together. Our introductory meeting will be held on Monday, September 12th in the downstairs meeting room next to the parish offices.

Dr. Phillips majored in Classics and Religious studies in college and pursued his study of Greek at each graduate level. The parisioners who studied Greek during our last sessions will assist him in teaching the class. Our text will be Learn New Testament Greek by John H. Dobson (the newest edition comes with a CD-ROM).

If you are interested in taking part in this class, or have any questions about it, please contact Dr. Phillips by email, cphillips@saint-peters.org, or by leaving a message on his office voicemail, 703-536-6606. If you want to get a head start, you might order the book now from an internet bookseller or from the seminary bookstore at Virginia Theological Seminary.
