Latest News on the Building (June 2012)
| Dear Parishioners,I am pleased to report that excellent progress continues on the renovation and that we remain on schedule for a post-Labor Day groundbreaking.Earlier this year we began a more formal process with our builder to determine if the design we had developed was within our budget – what we found was that their preliminary estimates were higher than we had anticipated. Thus began our efforts to seek cost reductions.
Over the past several months, the Building Committee has been working closely with our architect and builder to value engineer the design – reducing the price and optimizing the plans. While the final construction estimate is still underway, through this process we have identified over $650,000 in savings. This reduction brings us closer to the amount that we had originally projected, but still slightly higher. Our goal is to realize additional reductions through the actual bidding process.
While the vast majority of changes will have little impact on the building design, we identified and accepted several – resulting in very significant savings – that you may notice. These include:
- Elimination of the brick piers along the sidewalk (entering from the parking lot) – replacing them with a new lighting scheme
- Elimination of the brick wall along the entrance walkway (entering from the Glebe Road side) and the stepped amphitheater to the new patio – we will retain the new patio and have opted for a sloped hillside (like the Wolf Trap lawn)
- Elimination of the proposed new staircase (and associated structure) to the left of altar – thus we will retain the existing staircase from the Sunday School to the right side of the altar
- Slight alterations to the Sunday School configuration while maintaining the space to accommodate our growing needs
- Altering the proposed new flower room configuration at the top of the current staircase – shifting it into the sacristy on the right side of the Altar and adding flower storage over the stairs
The balance of the items identified primarily includes optimization of mechanical systems, structural configuration and re-working the design to accommodate materials, such as windows, that are standard sizes.
We will be posting the revised architectural drawings in the chapel over the weekend and encourage you to take a few minutes to re-visit them. We trust that you will be as excited as we are that this process is nearing reality and that the transformation of our building will be upon us in a few short months.
