  • Advent Resources for 2012

Here you can find a variety of resources for keeping a holy Advent in 2012.  These include on-line calendars, thought-provoking websites, and a copy of the St. Peter’s Advent Booklet.  More resources are still being added, so check back again soon.

Advent Booklet 2012 (a .pdf of the booklet mailed to parishioners)

This booklet includes a calendar of events for Advent at St. Peter’s.

    Online Advent Calendars

    • Full Homely Divinity This one features longish Scripture readings, art work, and a classical/sacred musical selection (not auto-play)
    • On BeliefNet, with different material every day.  More casual than high-brow. (Still brings up 2011 as of 11/26/12.)
    • A really ambitious one from Creighton University in Omaha, Praying Advent includes pages of prayers and material for instruction and reflection for every day.
    • From England, a calendar with a reading, meditation, and prayer for each day (summaries on Sundays).  Based on Mary’s journey from the Annunciation to the birth in Bethlehem.  (Still brings up 2011 as of 11/26/12.)
    • A really brief one from St. Mary Margaret Catholic parish in Naperville, Illinois: just an image and a snippet of Scripture.

    Other websites of seasonal interest:

    • A compendium of different seasonal resources from Anglicans Online
    • An exhibit of The Art of Advent at EpiscopalCafe.
    • Summary of the Great O Antiphons from Speaking to the Soul at EpiscopalCafe.  Brief meditations on each one, along with a link to a recording of it being sung, are also available:  O Sapientia, O Adonai, O Radix Jesse, O Clavis David, O Oriens, O Rex Gentium, O Emmanuel, O Virgin of Virgins.
    • The Presiding Bishop’s video Advent message, in which she asks the question, “What is it you are most waiting for?”
    • For those of you who enjoy blogs, this award-winning blog by an Anglican priest in Ireland highlighted 10 different poems during Advent 2011.  A fairly full account of the the author and thoughts on each poem are included.
    • Another blog: Love Blooms Bright. From Scotland, contributions by a different writer each day.  (Appears set to re-up for 2012 as of 11/26/12.)

Daily Scripture Readings for Advent 2012 (including elements of a Jesse Tree)

These Bible readings have been selected for each day of Advent  2012.  By reading them in order all the way through Advent you will be treated to a condensed version of the story of God’s relationship with his people from Creation to Incarnation.  The readings are here, already looked up and compiled for you.

If you want to make a Jesse Tree, there is also a chart showing the main character, the theme, and a description of the symbol for each day of Advent.   The symbols that can be colored, cut out, and glued to cardboard shapes, are here.  Note that there are more symbols than will be needed in 2012.  The season of Advent varies in length year by year, and Advent 2012 is particularly short.
