God’s Presence in a Joyful Pause

by Ed Gamber

After three full days of hands-on mission work—including painting classrooms, building shelves, clearing brush, trimming trees, and supporting Vacation Bible School (VBS)—our Saint Peter’s Episcopal Church mission team embraced a much-needed day of rest in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic.

The morning greeted us with brief showers over the harbor and several stunning rainbows arching across the sky—a gentle reminder of God’s promises and presence. We spent the morning snorkeling together as a group, exploring the vibrant underwater world of the Caribbean Sea, swimming among colorful tropical fish, and enjoying God’s creation—even through the occasional drizzle.

The afternoon was refreshingly unstructured. Some of us rested and took naps, others continued swimming or ventured out to explore the local area near our hotel. It was a day to slow down, reflect, and reconnect with one another in fellowship and joy.

Throughout these past few days, I have experienced the presence of God in countless ways: during our work at the school, in worship and daily reflections, while sharing meals, on early morning walks, and through music and song. Most powerfully, I have seen the goodness and love of God reflected in the joyful energy of the children we serve at VBS. Their enthusiasm, laughter, and openness to connection have touched my heart deeply.

As we continue our mission in the days ahead, this day of rest has renewed our spirits and reminded us why we serve. We carry the light of God with us—through action, compassion, and presence.
