Sunday Worship in Puerto Plata
By Heather and Heber Willis
Today is Sunday, so we began the day with a slightly later-than-usual breakfast outside our hotel while enjoying sea breezes. Ellison picked us up in the school bus and drove us to La Iglesia de Christo Rey in Puerto Plata, where we worshiped with Padre Raoul’s congregation. Jorge assisted by interpreting Pete Raoul’s sermon. The congregation welcomed us warmly and served us a delicious lunch after the service. Several youths from Cristo Rey gave flowers to our youth, and they posed joyfully for photos together.
Just a few days ago, Jean and I wrote inscriptions inside the covers of the Spanish-language copies of the Book of Common Prayer that Saint Peter’s gave to Cristo Rey. We used some of those copies today, and I was moved by the thought that the books and our notes will be part of worship services long after we leave the Dominican Republic.
In the afternoon Padre Raoul and Ellison, a dedicated and patient member of the parish, gave us a walking tour of Puerto Plata, including the central square, the street of flags, the street of umbrellas, and an ocean front pier.
We enjoyed brief stops at the Fortaleza de San Felipe and La Sirena store and visited a local artisan who is known by members of Saint Peter’s for their beautiful, handmade wooden parrots and other art.
While traveling on the bus, Sue led a discussion reflecting on the lesson of Mark 10: 21-22; what we have, what we need, and what are we each willing to sacrifice to follow Christ. It was a fitting reflection as we prepare for another day of service tomorrow.
Today’s update comes from Heather and Heber Wills. Heather and Heber Wills joined Saint Peter's a few years ago and jumped right in. They are parents to Grace and Charles. It is Heather's second trip to the Dominican Republic
