Remembering Our Mortality

All Hallow’s Eve

The popular name for All Hallow’s Eve is Halloween. Its roots reach back to Samhain, a Celtic harvest festival marking the turning of the year toward winter. As Christianity spread through the British Isles, this season became connected with All Saints’ Day on November 1 and All Hallow’s Eve on October 31.

In the Christian tradition, All Hallow’s Eve can invite us to remember our mortality, give thanks for the communion of saints, and celebrate the promise that we belong to Christ in life and in death. It is a time to remember those who have gone before us, to delight in the strange and joyful company of the church, and to practice hope together.

At Saint Peter’s, we mark the day with costumes, fellowship, food, and festive fun after worship on Sunday, October 26.
