Why housing matters
A house is never just a structure. It is a place where life can be held together.
“
Housing and homelessness ministry begins with the conviction that every person bears the image of God. A house is never just a structure. It is the place where a body can rest, a family can gather, medicine can be taken, a child can finish homework, and life can be held together.
Isaiah describes a future era of blessing where people will build their own houses and inhabit them. Again and again, the Bible presses us to attend to the hungry, thirsty, sick, imprisoned, unclothed, and the immigrant.
How Saint Peter’s Serves
Saint Peter’s supports housing stability through hands-on service,
seasonal generosity, emergency response, and community partnership.
Repairing homes through Rebuilding Together
Through Rebuilding Together, Saint Peter’s volunteers help repair homes so that neighbors can live more safely and comfortably. This work has included cleaning, hauling, repairing railings and steps, replacing appliances, installing doors, improving accessibility, landscaping, and making homes safer for residents whose needs exceed what they can manage alone.
This ministry is deeply relational. Volunteers bring practical skill, time, and strength. Homeowners bring their stories, resilience, and welcome. Together, the work becomes more than repair. It becomes a sign that a neighbor is not alone.
Standing with families through AHC
Saint Peter’s also partners with Affordable Homes and Communities — AHC through seasonal support for families and children, including Christmas trees and gifts. These acts of giving are not simply holiday projects. They are ways of standing with families for whom stable housing, children’s flourishing, and community support belong together.
Responding when urgent needs arise
When emergency housing needs arise, Saint Peter’s responds as we are able, connecting compassion with practical support. Some needs are public and organized. Others are quiet and pastoral. In both, the call is the same: to see Christ in the neighbor who needs shelter, stability, and care.
Showing Up to Enact Change
Saint Peter’s also understands housing as a justice issue. Through community engagement and partners such as VOICE, we join with others in listening, training, advocacy, and public action for the common good. Sometimes love looks like a workday. Sometimes love looks like showing up at a meeting. Sometimes love looks like raising our voices with neighbors whose housing is at risk
A faith that repairs
Housing ministry asks for more than sympathy. It asks for repair.
Repairing a railing can reduce the risk of a fall. Replacing an appliance can restore dignity to a household. Providing gifts for children can remind a family that they are seen. Supporting emergency housing can help someone bridge a crisis. Organizing for housing justice can change the conditions that keep people unstable.
God is always making a home among us
This is holy work because God is always making a home among us. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. The church follows Christ by helping neighbors dwell safely, with dignity and hope.
